“The Teen Producers changed my life. It let know that there were other options out there for me.” – Jabril Battle

Dear Supporter:

You make San Diego a better place to live.

Every year, thousands of kids and teens are able to gain access to media-making tools and the training necessary to use them to tell their stories, practice citizen journalism, and improve their success in school—because of people like you. Media is all around us: billboards, videos, blogs, television commercials, and social media outlets like Facebook, and Twitter. While these forms of media can be entertainment, they are also educational tools—important tools for the twenty-first century. Many at-risk and low-income kids never get the chance to learn about media—to understand how media influences our daily lives, and to be a part of making, not just consuming, it.

Media literacy is essential for school and later career success. At the Media Arts Center San Diego (MACSD), we work with disadvantaged kids and teens from the San Diego/Tijuana border region whose families are challenged by immigration issues, poverty, unemployment, and violence. Many of these young people are refugees from war-torn African countries, Latinos, and immigrants, who, through programs like our Teen Producers Program, learn to tell stories about issues that affect their families and communities.

All this because you support the programs at MACSD.

According to the Public Policy Institute of California, more than 20% of San Diegans are adversely affected by a digital divide—defined as the gap between those who have access to computers and the Internet, and those who do not. This year, generous supporters like you have helped us build our youth programs and make great strides toward bridging the digital divide in San Diego County and the Tijuana region. The kids who benefit from our media education classes count on us to offer these programs and we count on your support to help us continue to bring these programs to them.

Says Teen Producer Oscar Perez (age 14), “Media Arts Center is an important to me, because they’ve helped me through a lot and they are there for the community. The program is great for kids…you have great experiences, they are not out on the streets doing anything bad, and they are getting something out of it, like real life skills.”
